More Information:
Here in the land of a thousand hills, German missionaries first introduced coffee in the early 1900’s, then in the 1950’s an important coffee varietal Bourbon Mayaguez 71 and 139 was introduced . Grown on sloped terraced hills in rich volcanic soil by over 600 small coffee land owners, the coffee is grown at elevations over 1700 meters and once picked is then brought to the Gift Coffee Company washing station. This coffee station was built to serve the needs of the Gift coffee farms but also to give access to the community of local farmers so they can benefit from the expertise in processing, washing, sorting and drying the coffee beans and preparing them for export. The coffee is fully washed from the waters of Mount Huye then pulped and fermented for up to 24 hours then dried on raised African beds over a month long period till the optimal moisture content of roughly 12% is reached. Roughly 80% of the farmers only use natural fertilizers. The objective of the Gift Coffee Company is to assist the local community and uplift the livelihoods of the coffee farmers.
